The revelation is the latest in a string of bad news for Facebook. In just a couple of months, the company has suffered multiple outages that are considered in selling users data after pledging not to and a bug that has affected 6.8 million people giving permission to the third party apps to access their pictures. Not including the testimonials on Capitol Hill and other scandals that the company faced last year.
The Attorney General for the District of Columbia has filed a suit against Facebook for permitting political consultancy has filed a suit against Facebook for permitting political consultancy Cambridge Analytica access to the personal data of tens of millions of users without their permission.
In 2012, the Federal Trade Commission settled with the Facebook over claims that the social networks ‘deceived consumers by telling them that they would keep their information on Facebook private and repeatedly allowing it to be shared and made public.’ As a part of the settlement, the FTC required the Facebook give users ‘clear and prominent notice obtaining their express consent before sharing their information beyond their privacy settings, and to keep a comprehensive privacy program to protect the consumers information.
The commission had also stated that the it would be a ‘biennial privacy audits from an independent third party’ to make sure it is properly protecting the user information. It was also mentioned that users need to opt-in to utilize their Facebook account on a third party platform, like Spotify, Netflix or Bing.
SO, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? :
Facebook, like the other social networks and platforms, which allows the developers to connect to its service using the tools which are known as APIs. The goal to promote is allowing the people to connect with their Facebook friends without having to leave to other apps. And the pop-ups we see after you click on a ‘connect to Facebook’ or ‘sign in with Facebook’ button is letting you log in to Facebook and telling the information of what is being shared and what are parts of your Facebook, the company you are connecting with will have access to. Since the APIs was designed to use Facebook’s messaging feature, our APIs providing the partner with access to the person’s message in order to power this type of feature.
As of now, the company is currently in the midst of reviewing all our APIs and the partners accessing them.
HAS THE GOVERNMENT COMMENTED?:
Legislators from both the sides of the aisle have shared their thoughts on this latest version of revelation as with the calls growing for Congress to regulate the social network.
It is beyond the point that it is obvious, social media platforms are simply not up to the task of voluntarily ensuring their privacy and security of their users.
WHEN PROTECTION MARCH FORWARD:
To protect the Facebook Data right now, it is really hard to say what can be done seemingly and disclosure of about how Facebook handles the user data. Deleting the Facebook account is certainly an option, which would give the prevalence of not just the main product of Facebook but also Whatsapp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger for many being dropped as the company isn’t feasible.
Serving yet another to be a reminder and about thinking twice, about what to share or post online. While the companies state that they would protect the data as Facebook had shown the data as it goes further.
